AC21DOJ Copyright Related Information

Anything/everything on this website -- "A Century 21 Disciple of Jesus" (AC21DOJ.org / ShakinAndShinin.org) -- is intended for noncommercial, personal use only. Please feel free to quote from anything on this site. If/when doing so, however, please be sure to cite the source thusly:

Taken from A Century 21 Disciple of Jesus website (AC21DOJ.org), <exact URL>.

For example, the citation for material from this webpage would be:

Taken from A Century 21 Disciple of Jesus website (AC21DOJ.org), http://AC21DOJ.org/CopyRightInfo.html

In the course of rebuilding this website** I have contacted a number of publishers of Christian literature in an effort to become familiar with and abide by their copyright restrictions. What I have discovered is that seemingly no two publishers have the exact same requirements. Permissions run from "nothing on any website" to "just about anything for a fee." As a result, my intention is to use as few direct/verbatim quotes as possible. In those instances where I do quote directly, I will attempt to abide by the copyright restrictions imposed by the publisher/copyright holder of that material.

More information regarding copyright can be found at the official website of the U.S. Copyright Office.

Rather than entire articles, article excerpts, or lots of direct quotes, my goal will be to accurately summarize or paraphrase as much as possible -- while being careful to cite the source.

(** This website began in 1999 while I was a Bible college student. As I began acquiring more and more electronic resources, I started copying and pasting entire articles (verbatim, with full attribution) onto my website. Since this website is a ministry and all its resources are available completely free of charge, I naively neglected to consider copyright restrictions. Eventually I was contacted by two major Christian publishers who politely but firmly demanded that I remove their copyrighted material from my website. At that point I decided to remove everything from my site and start over completely, this time around being careful to abide by copyright restrictions.)

Direct Quote or Paraphrase/Summary?

Words, phrases, or sentences placed inside quotation marks preceding a source citation hyperlink -- that is, [1], [2], [3], etc. or [REF] -- indicates a direct quote. Example:

  • "This is a direct quote." [1]

  • "This is a direct quote." [REF]

Words, phrases, or sentences not in quotation marks preceding a source citation hyperlink -- that is, [1], [2], [3], etc. or [REF] --  indicates a summary or paraphrase. Example:

  • This is a summary/paraphrase; it is not a direct quote. [1]

  • This is a summary/paraphrase; it is not a direct quote. [REF]

Where there is no source citation hyperlink, either the idea is my own or it is a very common idea found among several sources.

Block Quotes

In most cases, material included in block quotes represents a summary or paraphrase. (If directly quoted material is included, it will be in quotation marks.) In these cases, I use a (two-celled) table set at 100%. Example:

A Closet Drinker

The story is told of a deacon who was zealous for the cause of temperance, constantly railing against the evils of alcohol.

One day the deacon decided to have some improvements done to his living room. As the carpenter was surveying the project, he happened across a well concealed closet. Much to his surprise, within the closet he found a bottle of whiskey and some glasses. He immediately made the deacon aware of his discovery.

The deacon seemed truly shocked, and he quickly surmised that the previous owner must have left it behind when he moved out thirty years earlier.

"'Ah, perhaps he did,' answered the carpenter, 'but say, deacon, that ice in the pitcher must have been well frozen to have remained solid all this time.'" [1]

In the event a block quote is comprised entirely of material quoted verbatim (in most cases this would be from a resource in the public domain), the (two-celled) table will be set at 90%. Example:

  • apostles and prophets to lay the foundation and launch the mission (Eph. 2:20; 3:5)

  • evangelists, pastors and teachers to proclaim the revealed word with authority (Eph. 4:11)

  • others with gifts for government to join them in ruling the church (Rom. 12:8; 1 Cor. 12:28; 1 Tim. 5:17)

  • and deacons to administer the service of mercy (1 Tim. 3:8–13)

Those who govern are given to the church by Christ to serve in his name, under his lordship. [1]

Citation Info (Javascript)

Source citation info is available via hyperlinked javascript popup windows -- that is, [1], [2], [3], etc or [REF]. If you are having trouble viewing this info, you may need to add the following two sites to the trusted sites area in your website browser. Be sure that your trusted sites security level is set at Medium.

http://www.ac21doj.org

http://www.shakinandshinin.org

I also noticed that the citation info popup windows do not display correctly with Content Advisor activated in Internet Explorer 7. The window opens but does not automatically jump to the bookmarked resource details. I'm not sure what the fix is for this, other than disabling Content Advisor (which is actually the default setting, anyway).
